How It Works

Produce Box Subscriptions

We provide fresh, nutritious locally grown chemical-free and Australian certified organic fruit and vegetable boxes to households across the Bega Valley.

Each week starts here at Big Sky Farm in Stony Creek. We harvest what’s ready from our own market garden, then collect or receive produce from other local growers including Grass Boots Farm and Grow the Future.

On Tuesday morning, our certified organic produce arrives from Eco-Farms in Sydney, who source from Australian certified organic growers. It travels to the Bega Valley with Bobbin’s refrigerated transport, helping keep everything fresh and in good condition on the trip south.

Once everything has arrived, we bring it together in our commercial packing shed and cool room here at Big Sky Farm, where we sort, hand prepare and pack every order before it heads out for delivery across the Bega Valley.

By subscribing, you’re supporting our small farm, other local chemical-free growers and Australian organic farmers who are working to grow clean nutritious great tasting produce while caring for the land they steward.

Subscribers also have access to a growing range of local and organic subscriber only add-ons including eggs, bread, preserves, garlic, coffee and more.

Fresh food, locally grown where we can, sourced carefully by trusted agents when we can’t, and packed here on our farm.

Our boxes combine useful everyday staples with the best produce available that week.

You can expect familiar favourites such as potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, cucumber, zucchini, broccoli, mushrooms, avocado, leafy greens, apples, oranges and bananas, alongside changing seasonal produce such as tomatoes, corn, capsicum, cauliflower, asparagus, mandarins, pears, grapes, melons and berries.

Local when we can, Australian organic when we need to

We always prioritise produce grown here at Big Sky Farm and by other local chemical-free growers. The balance naturally changes through the year depending on the season, weather and what is available locally.

While we embrace seasonal eating, we also recognise that many households rely on certain staples such as bananas, cucumbers and zucchini throughout the year.

As growers, we understand how much climate and location affect what can be grown at any one time. We also know that most families don’t have the time, space or ability to grow and preserve enough food to maintain a varied diet throughout the year.

That is why we complement locally grown produce with certified organic fruit and vegetables from Australian farmers, primarily along the east coast.

In spring, summer and autumn, a larger share of your box may come from our farm and nearby growers. In winter, when local supply naturally becomes more limited, we rely more heavily on certified organic Australian produce.

Our aim is to strike a practical balance between local, seasonal food and a useful, nutritious variety of produce that households will actually eat each week.

We also know from experience, both buying and supplying produce boxes, how frustrating it can be to open a box and find too many items that leave you wondering, “What do I do with this?”

During the colder months, local variety can become more limited, with crops such as cabbages, kale, kohlrabi and artichokes becoming more abundant. We enjoy these foods too, and we like introducing subscribers to something different from time to time, but we don’t want unusual or less versatile vegetables to simply become fillers that people struggle to use every week.

Our approach is to keep most of the box familiar, useful and easy to cook with, while still including enough seasonal variety to keep things interesting and fun for those of us who love trying new recipes and foods.

Choosing the Right Box

As a general guide:

Small: 1–2 people
Medium: 3–4 people
Large: 4–5 people

Every household eats differently, so you can change your box size as you work out what suits you.

Many subscribers tell us they end up eating more fruit and vegetables simply because there is always good produce in the house.

If your household gets through a lot of fresh produce, you can also:

move up to a larger box
add a second box
add extra fruit
add our Garlic, Onion & Ginger Pack

Changes need to be made before the Thursday night cut-off for the following week.

We also take advantage of good-value seasonal produce and occasional farmers’ seconds. These might look a little different from supermarket produce but are still excellent quality. It helps farmers sell more of what they grow, reduces waste and lets us put better value into your box.
